statement.
giacinta frisillo is a multidisciplinary artist who works with print, bookmaking, performance, video and installation. the core of her research is often printmaking but a substantial part of her work is a reconsideration of the medium in time-based formats. her practice focuses on women – more specifically: gendered societal expectations, the female body, the resulting loneliness and where she falls within these. many of her pieces address the tension between what is considered contemporary art and what is often seen as traditional domestic craft, especially those that are most notably produced by women.
by recontextualizing durational processes, such as both traditional and more innovative and less-considered styles of printmaking, she attempts to experience and help make visible the transformational qualities of repetitive action. in her more recent return to performance as art, this same mechanized repetitive action is carried out, but here, with her body, rather than through the use of printmaking machinery. by focusing on durational silent performance, her work explores, researches and exposes hidden or unrecognized labor. her work aims to give voice to and make visible all those who call the female body, home.
